面临种种挑战,人缘组织更重要
三州华美化学会举办新年年会,号召会员及朋友们踊跃参加

2009年是变化的一年,挑战的一年,奥巴马走马上任,国会通过巨额经济刺激计划,医疗保健改革,失业率高居不下,各行各业都在紧缩开支苦渡难关。在这样的形势下,三州华美化学会 (Tri-State CACS),美东北地区凝聚化学医药化工科技人员的华人社团积极为会员着想,为会员提供就业信息,并继续为本地高中生提供“青年学生化学奖”。

三州华美化学会将于1月30日周六晚5:00在位于East Brunswick的Sunny Palace大酒店举办一年一度的新年晚会。为会员们提供一个欢聚一起,忘掉烦恼忧愁,交流有用信息,结识新朋,联系好友,美食佳肴,联谊联欢, 总结过去2009年的收获成就经验教训,展望2010年的目标和方向,交流各自的心得与体会,相互协助帮忙,争取新的一年里有新的成就。

晚会有10 道大餐,乐队,DJ,,快乐舞会,卡拉OK,游戏等。时值新春, 欢迎会员们踊跃参加,也欢迎新会员积极参入。

建会二十五年多的华美化学会是一个志愿者参与的,无政治倾向,非盈利的组织。学会面对从事化学化工医药以及有关行业的专业人士。学会建立了独树一帜的“导师项目”(mentor program),给新入行的专业人员以帮助和提携。学会的“青年学生化学奖”,每年给高中高年级学生提供奖学金,以鼓励高中生对化学以及有关专业的兴趣。最近,学会开始向会员们推荐移民方面的专家,以满足会员们在移民以及法律方面的要求。2007年,三州华美化学会与国内合作,成功地在北京举办了《北京国际医药研发论坛》,吸引了不少国内外医药界的同事参加。而三州华美化学会也于今年六月成功举办专题为“化学之全球挑战与机会”的年会,近三百多位化学化工医药科技人员相聚一起,就化学小分子在医药方面的发展,挑战与机会进行了热烈的讨论。来自制药大公司以及化学,化学仪器,医药器材等公司的高层管理人员与资深化学家在年会上作了精彩的讲演。2009年夏,三州华美化学会还将于中国专利局下属中国知识产权研究会共同合作举办第二届北京国际医药化学知识产权高峰会议。

    2009年 三州华美化学会《青年化学奖》揭晓

    活跃在新州大纽约地区的专业人士协会--- 三州华美化学会( Tri-state Chinese American Chemical Society ) 为了提高美国高中学生对科学的兴趣,奖励华裔高中生在科研上的成就,专门设立了《青年化学 奖》(Young Chemist Award) 。经过了认真的评定,今年的《青年化学奖》的得主为宾州Hatboro-Horsham高中的Andrew Wu, 新州Watchung Hills Regional 高中的Dennis Xuan 和新州Montgomery 高中的David Zhao.

    Andrew Wu就读于宾州Hatboro-Horsham高中,今年九月进入十二年级。他认为化学在生活中有很多的实际用途,并可以用来改善生活质量。Andrew是national merit semifinalist and AP scholar得主。 作为名列全校前茅的全A学生,Andrew不仅仅学业优异,而且课外活动丰富。他是学校科学俱乐部的发起人和主席,也是学校网球队的主要队员,他与其他队员一起在网球比赛中获得过团体第二名的好成绩。

    Dennis Xuan 是Watchung Hills Regional高中十二年级的学生,学习成绩优异。他在高中十年级就开始选修了AP Chemistry并得了A, 给任课老师留下了深刻印象。暑假期间,他专门到罗格斯大学Joseph L. Dixon博士的实验室去做暑期实习生,亲身体验大学的科研是怎么进行的。不出意料,他的SAT II Chemistry 的成绩是完美的800分。自上高中就一直是优秀生 (honor roll)的他,还参加了很多课外活动,他是学校的击剑队的主要成员,机器人俱乐部的成员。弹有一手好钢琴的他,常常去Somerset成人中心去做义工,为社区服务。

    笑口常开的David Zhao是新州Montgomery高中十一年级的学生。他从小就对化学比较感兴趣。上了高中不久,他就把化学“学透了”,不仅拿了SAT II 满分(800), 还把AP chemistry 考过了,最高分5分!AP 5分相当于完全通过了大学化学基础课,上了大学是可以免修这一课程的。David 不仅仅化学学得好,他的数学也十分优异,十年级, 他不仅满分拿下了SAT II Math, 更是5分通过了AP Calculus (大学微积分)。不用提David 其他优秀的学业成绩和丰富多彩的课外活动,他的老师在推荐信中说,这个学生是他十多年执教中亮丽的明星,他将在理科学习中有很大的出息。

    本次青年学生化学奖得主将收到电子通知获奖的消息,本人和他们的家长将被邀请参加华美化学会新年联欢晚会,在晚会上接受学会颁发的证书和奖金。

    Tri-State Chinese American Chemical Society awards Young Chemist Awards every year to outstanding high school students to cultivate their interests in Chemistry and Science in general among Chinese-American youth in the greater tri-state area. This year, the CACS Young Chemist Awards go to Andrew Wu from Pennsylvania, Dennis Xuan and David Zhao from New Jersey. The three will receive their awards that include a certificate and a cash prize at the upcoming CACS Chinese New Year Party on Saturday, January 30, 2010.

    Andrew Wu, currently a senior at Hatboro-Horsham High School of Pennsylvania, was attracted to chemistry in a young age by attending chemistry programs offered by his parents’ companies. He is a straight A student and ranks at the top in his class. Andrew is a National Merit Semifinalist and AP scholar with honor. He is the founder and president of a Science Club in his school. He has traveled across the country to participate and won a variety of individual and team competitions. As stated in one of his recommendation letters, “his accomplishments are truly without precedent”. Besides academic achievements, Andrew is also an outstanding tennis player and helped his team to a 2nd place finish in Boys’ Varsity Tennis.

    Dennis Xuan, currently a senior at Watchung Hills Regional High School, has a very impressive academic record. He has started taking AP courses since his sophomore year. He finished his AP chemistry course with a straight A before his junior year in high school. He demonstrated strong interest in chemistry and volunteered to work in Dr. Joseph L. Dixon’s Chemistry lab at Rutgers. He scored a perfect 800 in SAT II in chemistry. Dennis also ranked in the top 10% at Watchung Hills Regional High School. He has been on the honor roll since his freshman year in high school. His other extra curriculum activities included Varsity Fencing, Lego Robotics, and Piano. Dennis also volunteers at Somerset Adult Day Center.

    David Zhao is a junior at Montgomery High School. He has been fascinated by chemistry from a young age. He already took SAT II chemistry before taking SAT and got the perfect 800 score; he received a score of 5 in AP chemistry, a college level chemistry course in his sophomore year in high school. In addition, he also obtained perfect scores in AP Calculus, SAT II math, and SAT II Chinese. David is a member of the Montgomery Science Olympiad Team and won many individual and team medals in the central regional and New Jersey state competitions. One of his teachers wrote in his recommendation letter “David has already compiled an impressive academic record and is a student who has a bright future in the sciences”.

    第二届北京医药与化工知识产权国际高峰论坛获得世界瞩目

    由中国知识产权研究会,华美化学会与美国化学会法律部联合主办的第二届北京医药与化工知 识产权国际高峰论坛于八月五号-八号顺利在北京召开圆满结束,三百余名专利届精英从 世界各地汇聚北京,聆听中国第三次专利法修改案以及世界各地的最近专利进展。

    会议由国家国知局局长田力普任主席,国知局副局长贺化,甘绍宁任副主席。田力普主持了八月五号的招待酒会, 甘绍宁副局长主持第一天的开幕式,贺化副局长做主题发言。三位局长共同出席一次会议深深体现了深化开放持续 发展中的中国对知识产权重要性的认识。

    来自各大跨国制药公司,法国塞诺菲安万特(sanofi-aventis), 美国安进生物制药公司 (Amgen), 美国礼来制药(Eli Lilly)公司的专利科研总裁们在会议上做了精彩发言。他们一致强调,医药与化工领域不同于其他的工业, 对知识产权特别是专利依赖甚大。社会民众需要新药来对抗日趋复杂的各种疾病以及寿命延长而生出的种种毛病;若想生产新药, 财力(资金)人才(科研人员)不可缺少;若没有了新药,赖以生产仿制药的公司(generic companies)也没有了新鲜仿制来源。 所以,发明新药的制药公司与仿制药公司的和谐共存均衡发展才真正能够满足社会需求,也能刺激国民经济。

    而中国已经在短短的二十年中从制造业经济转型为高科技经济,尤其是近几年中,中国的科研以迅猛之速度追赶世界领先国家。 其表现是全社会科技经费筹集和投入每年翻数倍增长;科研方面(R&D) 的人力资源投入不断加强—各地区的高科 技创业区孵化器吸引了众多的科技精英;很多城市争当创新型城市—所谓依靠科技、知识、人力、文化、 体制等创新要素驱动发展的城市,从而达到对周边地区具有高端辐射与引领作用;近年来,中国的专利 申请数量攀升异常迅猛,国内的专利申请数量每年持有百分之二十的增长率,而在世界知识产权组织(WIPO) 的专利申请增长率则是世界前三名 。

    在中国迅速成为专利大国的同时,了解世界专利动向,让世界了解中国的专利进展也成了当务之急。 正基于此想法,美国的华美化学会(Chinese American Chemical Society)与中国知识产权研究会共同携手, 把世界最具名望的著名专利专家请到中国北京谈专利的改革,谈专利的进展,谈专利的动向,让国内的专利届人士收益; 同时也让专利专家们看到了中国专利事业的迅速发展,达到了交流提高的目的。

    华美化学会早就意识到专利在中国的发展势头,他们于2006年便发起和组织了第一届北京医药与化工知识产权国际高峰论坛, 并获得了圆满成功。当时有人便评价这是一流的国际会议。第二届高峰论坛在第一届的高基础上,更进一步, 决策人物领军人士专家精英通共聚一堂,最新动向最高水准的演讲让与会者受益匪浅。

    华美化学会三州分会会长王旭红是本届大会的主要组织者之一,海外筹备会主席。她在招待酒会上以及开幕会致词中表示: 华美化学会是义工组成的非盈利组织,主要的任务就是搭桥,让世界与中国多联系多了解多沟通。因此我们愿意与国内合作, 各扬所长。三州华美化学聚海外之专业人脉,集海外之雄厚财力,而国内单位立足本地,有很多长项,大家精诚合作, 为中国打造一个知识产权的名牌会议。

    与会者反映甚好,纷纷表示这是一次水平很高的会议,希望下届能合作,能参与,能学习,能受益。

    《專家闡述製藥業發展動態》

    三州華美化學學會日前在新澤西州羅格斯大學布什校區中心(Busch Campus Center)舉辦年會,四位跨國製藥及化學企業高級主管主講製藥業發展動態,而華裔企業家則分享擔任東西方製藥工業橋樑的經驗,與約200名聽眾熱烈討論。

    上 午專題演講部分,先靈(Schering Plough)資深副總裁Gregory Szpunar首先說明製藥業發展現況與趨勢,嬌生(Johnson & Johnson)副總裁Arthur Andrews闡述新藥研發的新策略,賽諾菲安萬特(Sanofi Aventis)資深副總裁Paul Juniewicz分析製藥研發的新模式,最後由陶氏化學公司研發主任Nilesh Shah講解高度競爭中的求勝之道。

    四位演講者普遍認為,雖然人口老化將增加製藥需求,但研發成本急劇上揚,醫療負擔大幅擴增,藥價的不斷走高,以及消費者要求降價的壓力日增,造成製藥企業的兩難局面。

    該會會長王旭紅表示,目前製藥工業既有挑戰,也有機會。如何提供有效的服務,尋求發展又能獲利,而民眾又能受惠的兩全其美途徑,可說是本次年會的主要訴求。

    上 午場係由大企業高階主管,從宏觀角度探討製藥發展。下午場則由多位華裔中小企業主管,以座談會方式,分享在中國大陸成功創業的實務經驗。演講者包括 ChemPartner資深副總裁王易光、Exxon亞洲部主任曹光、XenoBiotic Laboratories副總裁顧正明、Medicilon副總裁徐宏、AstaTech副總裁John Chan、Mestrelab Research主任彭成與Acesys PharmaTech創辦人葉振贊。這些公司營業項目,主要是媒介中國大陸與美國製藥業合作,或是承包美國的外包計畫。

    Gregory Szpunar會中指出,美國新藥研發成本快速增加,平均每件獲食品暨藥物管理局通過的新藥研發成本,1975年僅4900萬元,2005年則高達16億 2600萬元。而美國的醫療費用占其國內生產總值(GDP)比率,高達16%,是全球醫療成本最高的國家,因而美國降低醫療費用與研發成本,已刻不容緩。 會中普遍認為,與成本相對低廉的中國大陸合作,或可解燃眉之急。(方驀白)

    三州华美化学会的《青年化学 奖》已经设立六年,数十位优秀的高中学生获得此奖,获奖人已经奔赴各优秀大学读书深造, 有些已经大学毕业。

    申请人须是在校高中11年级或者12年级的学生(公布之日算起),申请材料须包括料须包括:

  • 高中学生本人的申请自述 (essay);
  • 高中成绩单以及其他奖项;
  • SAT 或其它标准化考试成绩;
  • 两封来自教师,家长或社会的推荐信。

    The Tri-State Chinese American Chemical Society announces that its 2009 Annual Symposium will be held on Saturday, June 13, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, at Busch Campus Center, Rutgers University, Piscataway, NJ (Address: 604 Bartholomew Rd, Piscataway, NJ 08854). The symposium is co-sponsored by the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, Rutgers University. Registration is free for Tri-State CACS members. Free breakfast and lunch will also be provided to all symposium participants.

    The annual symposium serves to bring CACS members and nonmember chemists together for networking and career development. It is open to all students and professionals in chemistry and related fields. This year's symposium “Innovation and Entrepreneurships in Pharmaceutical and Chemical R&D” will feature prominent leaders from both pharmaceutical and chemical industries including Dr. Greg Szpunar, Sr. VP of Pharmaceutical Science and Drug Metabolism at Schering-Plough Research Institute, Dr. Paul Juniewicz, Sr. VP & Head of Global External Innovation Access at sanofi-aventis, Dr. Arthur Andrews, VP of Global Drug Product Development at Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical R&D, and Dr. Nilesh Shah, Research and development Director of Household & Personal Care, Dow Advanced Materials. The symposium also features business leaders and entrepreneurs from start-ups and outsourcing companies based in the US as well as in China in the fields of pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

    CACS was founded in 1981 as a volunteer-based, non-profit professional organization. CACS addresses the common interests and concerns of Chinese American chemical professionals. It has established a mentor program to help new comers gain quick footing in their professional careers in the US. It presents Young Chemist Awards annually to outstanding high school students to help cultivate their interests in chemical sciences.

    We welcome all members and non-members to the Symposium. Please register on-line at www.tristatecacs.org or via email at info@tristatecacs.org. On-site registration will also be accepted although you are encouraged to register online ahead of time to ensure seating and meal orders.     From New Jersey Turnpike (North or South)

    Take Exit 9. Bear right out of the toll plaza, following signs for "Route 18 North - New Brunswick" Merge left onto Route 18 North, go straight through two lights (Paulus Blvd. & Commercial Ave.), pass the exits for "Route 27" and "George St. - Rutgers Univ." and cross the Raritan River on the John Lynch Bridge toward the Busch Campus (approx. 4 miles total).
    Take the "Campus Road - Busch Campus" exit.
    Proceed to the traffic circle, and take the first right out of the circle onto Bartholomew Road (may not be marked). Keep the chain link fence on your right.
    At the 4-way stop, continue straight on Bartholomew Road, crossing Brett Rd.
    At the top of the hill, turn right into a large parking lot (lot #51), across the street from the Busch Campus Center.
    Enter the front of the Busch Campus Center. You can pick up your name tag at the registration tables straight ahead if you registered online; otherwise, proceed to On-Site Registration.


    From Garden State Parkway (North and South)

    Southbound - coming from northern New Jersey

    Take Exit 129 for the New Jersey Turnpike and head south Follow directions to campus from the NJ Turnpike (see above)

    Northbound - coming from southern New Jersey

    Take Exit 105 and follow signs for Route 18 North
    After approx. 24 miles, pass the entrance for the NJ Turnpike and continue on Route 18 North
    Follow directions to campus from the NJ Turnpike


    From Route 1 (North and South)

    Take exit marked "Route 18 North - New Brunswick" then follow directions from the New Jersey Turnpike


    From Route 287 (North and South)

    Take Exit 9 for "Bound Brook/Highland Park"
    Proceed East on River Road toward Highland Park. Shortly after the third traffic light, turn left onto Sutphen Road.
    Turn left at the 4-way stop (stadium on your right) onto Bartholomew Road (may not be marked)
    At the traffic circle, take the second right out of the circle to continue on Bartholomew Road
    At the 4-way stop, continue straight on Bartholomew Road, crossing Brett Rd.
    At the top of the hill, turn right into a large parking lot (lot #51), across the street from the Busch Campus Center
