Tri-State Chinese American Chemical Society Successfully
Held its Annual Symposium at Rutgers University
The Tri-State CACS held its annual symposium on June 16, 2007 in the Fiber
Optics Auditorium at Rutgers University Busch Campus. About 150 people attended
the symposium. The theme of the symposium was “Chemistry Frontiers: Challenges
and Opportunities in Global Competition.”
In his opening remarks, Dr. Guodong Chen, president of Tri-State CACS,
welcomed the speakers and the audience. He thanked the sponsors and volunteers
for their support that made the symposium possible. He also reiterated that
the mission of CACS was to promote the professional development of Chinese
chemists in the US and to also act as a bridge in cross-Atlantic US-China
cooperation in chemical and pharmaceutical endeavors. He highlighted recent
achievements of the Tri-State CACS, citing the highly successful Tri-State
CACS annual symposia in recent years, the 2 nd International Drug Discovery
R&D Forum in Beijing (May 2007), and the 1st Beijing International Pharmaceutical
and Chemical Intellectual Property Forum (April 2006).
Prof. Longqin Hu, president-elect of the Tri-State CACS, and Dr. Daniel
Wang presided the morning sessions. Dr. Mauricio Futran, vice president
of Process Development at Bristol-Myer Squibb Co., delivered the keynote
speech. He spoke on “Opportunities in Small Molecule Process Development,”
describing a shift at BMS from the traditional linear, serial approach in
process development to an integrated, parallel process that requires efficient
incorporation of automated parallel data acquisition in the lab, on-line
monitor of scale-up process, and multi-level models. This shift, according
to Dr. Futran, had resulted in much faster process development at BMS.
The rest of the morning sessions focused on recent progress in drug discovery
chemistry and processes. Dr. Srikanth Venkatraman, a senior principal scientist
from Schering-Plough, described the discovery of a protease inhibitor for
the treatment of hepatitis C viral infection. Dr. John Ellingboe, assistant
vice president at Wyeth, spoke on the impact of new chemical and screening
technologies on improving the quality of drug candidates and how the new
technologies help reduce cycle time. Dr. Walter Korfmacher, a distinguished
fellow at Schering-Plough, described mass spectrometry strategies for speeding
the lead optimization process. The different perspectives from these leaders
in their fields were very well received and they stimulated lively discussions
with the audience.
The afternoon sessions were presided by Drs. Fangbiao Li and Yong Huang.
The topics centered on cutting edge technologies and resources that have
become available to chemical and pharmaceutical R&D. Speakers from Waters
Corp., Thermo Fisher Scientific, and TASCON USA, Inc. talked about advances
in instrumentation. Representatives from AstaTech, Tyger Scientific, and
United Pharmatech introduced to the audience their outsourcing services
for pharmaceutical and chemical industries.
Prof. Longqin Hu closed the symposium by thanking all the participants
of the symposium for their support. He wished everyone well and hoped to
see them in the future at Tri-State CACS organized activities.

AstaTech, Tyger, Chempartner,
BMS(施贵宝)的研发副总裁Mauricio
Tyger, Chempartner, United Pharmatech
