Dr. Guodong Chen, President for 2007, summarized the past year's activities that included two successful conferences. In May of 2007, the Tri-State CACS successfully organized the 2nd International Pharmaceutical R&D Forum in Beijing. In June, the Tri-State CACS organized the 2007 Tri-State CACS Annual Symposium at Rutgers University. The theme of the June symposium was “Chemistry Frontiers: Challenges and Opportunities in Global Competition”. It featured Dr. Mauricio Futran, Vice President of Process Research and Development from Bristol-Myers Squibb as the keynote speaker. Both conferences were well attended and received.

Prof. Longqin Hu, the new President for 2008, presented an outlook on activities planned for the coming year. The first and the most important activity will be the 2008 Annual Symposium. He announced that the 2008 Tri-State CACS Annual Symposium will be held on June 7 at Rutgers University's Busch Campus Center. The Tri-State CACS is also planning the 2nd Beijing International Pharmaceutical and Chemical Intellectual Property Form, tentatively scheduled for October. In addition, Tri-State CACS will participate and sponsor activities with other organizations like the January 23 Roundtable Discussion with a delegation from Chinese Chemical Industry organized by the New Jersey Commerce Commission. He asked for active participation and support from members and board directors in these activities.

At the New Year Party, four new Executive Board directors were elected: they were Zhongli Gao from Sanofi-Aventis, Qingjie Ding from Roche, Wendy Zhong from Schering Plough, and Shifang Luo from ExxonMobil. Each will serve a three-year term. Sunny Xuhong Wang from Sanofi-Aventis, who has been actively involved with the Tri-State CACS and made many contributions, was elected the President-Elect and will become the President in 2009. In her acceptance speech, Ms. Wang said she will use the Tri-State CACS as a platform for members to network and to advance their careers while having fun serving the community.

Dr. Yuguang Wang, President for 2005, presented the Tri-State CACS Outstanding Service Award to Dr. Guang Cao, President for 2006, for his outstanding contributions to the Tri-State CACS. Under Dr. Cao's leadership, the Tri-State CACS successfully held the 1st Beijing International Pharmaceutical and Chemical Intellectual Property Forum, which provided a platform for open dialogue on Chinese and international practices in IP law, particularly patent laws as applied in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. The IP Forum was so well received that many requested the Tri-State CACS to continue the IP Forum in the future.

Dr. Rachel Xiaoqiu Wu, the Secretary-General of Tri-State CACS, announced the recipients of this year's Young Chemist Award. Two outstanding high school students, Sharon Li and Yibin Zhang, both from Montgomery High School, were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements in chemistry-related disciplines. This annual award encourages interest in chemistry and science among high school students, and has been a popular program since its inception in 2003.

The event provided entertainment as members and their families and friends performed songs and dances. The entertainment portion of the program included performances by Yingchao Zhang's one-person band, vocal performances by the well-known singer Mingzhen Gu, “Peacock” dance by Wei Li (a member), a segment of the Peking Opera “White Hair Girl” and a Dai dance “Bamboo Rainforest” by children of our members, Yoga and break dancing by the Taoying Performance Troupe, and performances by our Chemist and Musician John Wang. Special gifts were also presented at the party to members who drove the longest distance (180 miles) to the party, who brought the youngest child (3 year old) to the party, and who has been a member the longest (since 1991).

The New Year Party ended with the singing of Auld Lang Syne, which marked the beginning of a new year for the Tri-State CACS. Members exchanged greetings and promises to meet again at the 2008 Annual Symposium in June.
